Nasdaq, S&P hit record highs on upbeat jobs report

Markets in the United States opened higher on Friday as both Nasdaq 100 and the S&P 500 hit record highs on a better-than-expected October jobs report. Before the bell, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics said nonfarm payroll employment in the country jumped by 128,000, significantly topping estimates. Investors also digested corporate earnings from an array of companies, including oil giants Exxon Mobil and Chevron and Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.52% at 9:30 am ET. Walgreens was the best performer as it jumped 1.70% at 9:47 am ET.

The Nasdaq 100 climbed 0.53% at 9:30 am ET and the S&P 500 was up 0.56% at 9:30 am ET. Skyworks Solution, whose shares soared 5.13% at 9:31 am ET, led the gains on both indexes.

The euro traded flat against the dollar to sell for 1.11520 at 9:32 am ET and the pound added 0.06% compared to the US currency to go for 1.29504 at 9:33 am ET.
