US urges Iraq to halt protests with early election

The United States called on Sunday for a snap election in Iraq amid violent anti-government protests that started more than a month ago.

"The United States joins the UN Assistance Mission to Iraq in calling on the Iraqi government to halt the violence against protesters and fulfill President Salih’s promise to pass electoral reform and hold early elections," the White House said in a statement.

Since the beginning of October, more than 300 people were killed amid clashes between the protesters and the police in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities. On October 31, Iraq's President Barham Salih announced that Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi would resign from his post, adding that the country may go into an early election.
