Sturgeon: I won't back Corbyn without indyref promise

Scottish First Minister and Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) Nicola Sturgeon told the BBC on Wednesday that she is not prepared to help Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn get into Downing Street unless he promises to organize a second Scottish independence referendum in 2020. Sturgeon stated: "I won’t help him in power, to get into power, to stay in power."

Corbyn responded to Sturgeon via Twitter, saying: "There you have it. If you want to vote the Conservatives out of office, we need Labour MPs in Scotland. The SNP can't be trusted not to let Boris Johnson back in."

Earlier, Corbyn said he would not organize a second independence referendum in Scotland before 2025. However, after Corbyn's comments, the Labour Party clarified that its stance is that the second independence referendum is conditioned by Scottish elections in 2021 and the SNP's performance in that vote. If the SNP performed well in 2021, they could secure the new independence referendum before 2020, Labour added.
