US Senate passes bill backing HK protesters

The United States Senate passed a bill backing Hong Kong protesters.

The upper house of Congress unanimously approved the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act which would require the region’s special trade status with the US to be reviewed every year. If signed into law, the legislation would also sanction Chinese officials found to be undermining the "pro-democracy" protests in Hong Kong.

The bill will now be handed to the House of Representatives for a vote, and if passed, will be sent to President Donald Trump to sign it. On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington is "gravely concerned" about the unrest in China's special administrative region.
