China ready for prolonged trade war - state media

In a tweet on Wednesday, Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Global Times newspaper Hu Xijin said that "few" in China believe a trade deal with the United States will be reached soon, adding that given the current US policies towards China, many think that its effects would be limited. However, he added, China is ready for the "worst-case scenario" should the two economic superpowers fail to reach an agreement.

"Few Chinese believe that China and the US can reach a deal soon. Given current poor China policy of the US, people tend to believe the significance of a trade deal, if reached, will be limited. China wants a deal but is prepared for the worst-case scenario, a prolonged trade war," Hu wrote.

According to reports from China, the talks between Washington and Beijing have seemingly come to a standstill as the two countries remain at odds when it comes to the issues of removing previously imposed levies and the volume of farm purchases.
