European markets flat to lower amid US-China trade deal hopes

European markets opened mostly flat on Tuesday following an optimistic statement from Beijing's Ministry of Commerce. Chinese Vice Premier Liu He had a phone conversation with United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and reportedly reached consensus on sorting out the main issues in the negotiations. Meanwhile, in Germany, GfK reported that consumer confidence increased in November.

The DAX was flat at 9:06 am CET. HeidelbergCement lost the most, 0.79%, at 9:15 am CET.

The FTSE 100 was flat at 9:06 am CET. Foodservice company Compass Group plc was the worst performer, losing 5.09% at 9:05 am CET.

The CAC 40 was 0.07% lower at 9:07 am CET. Sodexo led the losses, falling 0.98% at 9:08 am CET.

The euro was flat compared to the dollar at 9:25 am CET, trading at 1.10142. The British pound lost 0.23% against the American currency, going for 1.28726 at the same time.
