Lagarde: ECB role to keep euro stable

New president of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, said on Wednesday that policymakers have a duty to keep the value of the euro stable.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of her first euro banknotes, Lagarde, who replaced Mario Draghi at the helm of the ECB this month, stated: "So it’s now our duty to nurture and sustain this trust - by ensuring that banknotes are secure, payments systems are robust, and the value of the euro is stable."

Recently, Lagarde called for more "innovative" ways to tackle challenges arising from global trade disputes and climate change. "Europe needs to innovate and invest to respond to these challenges and preserve its competitiveness in the longer run. But it also suggests that the high rates of trade growth that we are used to seeing are no longer an absolute certainty," she warned.
