US-China trade deal progress hindered by HK bills - report

The progress in trade negotiations between the United States and China was hindered by the legislation supporting the Hong Kong protesters that was passed recently by both chambers of the US Congress and by the American President Donald Trump, Axios reported, citing a source from Trump's administration.

The phase one of the trade agreement is expected to be finalized by the end of the year "at the earliest," the source said, adding that Trump will delay the tariffs on Chinese imports scheduled to be imposed in December to help the negotiation process.

Last week, the Chinese Foreign Ministry summoned US Ambassador Terry Branstad to protest the signing of Hong Kong bills into law, while Vice Foreign Minister of China Le Yucheng reportedly told Branstad that the relations between Beijing and Washington could suffer if the controversial bills become put into effect.
