Russia adopts law to allow branding people as foreign agents

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed on Monday a law passed by the Russian parliament which will allow people to be labeled as foreign agents, making it increasingly difficult for independent journalists and bloggers to operate in the country.

The newly adopted law prescribes that any material, published by individuals who are getting paid from abroad, be marked as material distributed by foreign agents.

Organizations and rights groups have been at risk of being labeled as foreign agents ever since the country adopted the first iteration of the law in 2012 and are required to regularly report on their source of funding, what they are advocating and the way they spend the money.
