Trump: NATO members should be contributing 4% of GDP

Speaking alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in London, US President Donald Trump reiterated his stance that NATO allies should increase spending from the current 2% target to 4% of national GDP.

"Spending requirement is very low, it should be 4%," Trump said, adding that apart from contributing more to the alliance, they should also pay back everything they failed to pay in the years past. "They owe the money from the past, nobody is talking about that," he underlined, adding that "we're talking about trillions of dollars here."

He also wrongly stated that the US is allocating 4.3% of GDP for NATO. According to the alliance's own estimates, the US has put 3.4% of GDP into NATO's budget in 2019.
