Asian markets rise on trade optimism

Markets in Asia traded with gains on Friday amid fresh trade optimism after the United States and China hinted they could reach a deal on trade soon. US President Donald Trump claimed that talks are "going well" and that "something could happen" regarding tariffs on Chinese products set to take effect next week and US National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien noted a phase one agreement is "close." Meanwhile, Beijing stressed the two sides are in "close contact" on trade and announced it is planning to provide tariff waivers for American pork and soybean imports.

The Nikkei 225 closed 0.23% higher. The dollar dipped 0.05% against the yen to sell for 108.7030 at 7:19 am CET.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed 0.82% at 7:20 am CET. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite added 0.07% at 7:19 am CET and the Shenzhen Composite rose 0.40% at 7:06 am CET.

In South Korea, the Kospi jumped 1.09% at 7:21 am CET and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was up 0.36% at the end of the session.
