Netanyahu calls for direct elections for PM

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that he prefers a direct election for the country's future head of the government. He added that "people and no one else" should choose directly between Kahol Lavan leader Benny Gantz and himself.

"There is one more thing we can do to prevent an unnecessary Knesset election: A direct election for the premiership between Benny Gantz and myself. Kahol Lavan say that they know what the people want, so I'm all for the people deciding and no one else - including the media," Netanyahu asserted.

Previously, Netanyahu and Gantz both failed in their attempts to form a majority coalition. Israel's Prime Minister wanted to form a unity government with Gantz, but the leader of the Blue and White alliance rejected the offer.
