Telefonica Deutschland chooses Nokia, Huawei for 5G
Telefonica Deutschland has picked Nokia and Huawei to build its 5G network, the German company announced on Wednesday.
Although Germany has not yet finalized security regulations regarding the 5G network industry, Telefonica Deutschland said its choice of the Finnish and Chinese tech giants would enable it to make a start on building its 5G network in early 2020.
“With this decision Telefonica Deutschland is taking into account the fact that the political process has not yet been completed, without delaying the start of work on building the 5G network,” the company said in a statement.
In October media reported that Germany initially planned to ban Huawei from its 5G networks, but then allegedly decided to allow it following concerns by German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the ban could negatively affect bilateral relations between her country and China. The following month, German lawmakers called for Huawei to be excluded from the bidding process.
