Rio Tinto to resume Richards Bay Minerals operations

Mining Company Rio Tinto announced on Monday that a phased restart of operations at Richards Bay Minerals in South Africa is now ongoing following several weeks of being halted due to unrest among local communities.

Return to full operations is expected in early January, the company said, while regular production is tentatively put at some time in early 2020. Titanium dioxide slag production is expected to remain at the bottom end of guidance for 2019, between 1.2 and 1.4 million tonnes.

The Anglo-Australian mining giant said the return to production was followed by discussions led by the Premier of the province of KwaZulu-Natal and other stakeholders in order to "secure stability" and tackle the issues in the community.

Rio Tinto's shares were down 0.23% at 9:23 am CET on the London Stock Exchange.
