US consumer inflation rate up to 2.3% in December

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for all items in the United States rose 2.3% on an annual basis in December, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Tuesday. The figure marks an increase from the annual inflation rate of 2.1% recorded in November.

The index for all items except food and energy was up 2.3% year on year, while food prices rose 1.8% on an annual basis and energy prices climbed 3.4%.

On a monthly basis, the CPI for All Urban Consumers added 0.2% compared to November, while the index less food and energy gained 0.1%. Energy prices rose 1.4% month on month and food prices were up by 0.2%.
