WHO declares global health emergency over coronavirus

The World Health Organization (WHO) declare don Thursday a global public health emergency in response to the outbreak of the coronavirus.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus insisted the decision is "not a vote of no confidence" in China where the disease originated, but rather a preventive measure in case the virus spreads in countries with a weaker health system. Ghebreyesus praised China for its response to the outbreak and measures taken to contain the disease, noting it "set the standard" for dealing with such situations.

The WHO called on all countries to work together to contain the virus which has affected over 8,000 people, out of which 170 have died. The WHO also issued recommendations for preventing the coronavirus from spreading further, which include making decisions based on evidence rather than rumors, accelerating the development of the vaccine against the virus, supporting countries with weaker health systems and sharing data.
