The British pound extended gains on Brexit Day, just over six hours before the United Kingdom will officially cease to be a member of the European Union after 47 years of membership and three and a half years after the Brexit referendum.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said earlier in the day the bloc wants the best possible relationship with the UK. London and Brussels are reportedly set to begin talks on the future relationship at the beginning of March.

The sterling gained 0.70% against the United States dollar at 5:45 pm CET to sell for $1.31853, highest since January 7, while adding 0.25% on the euro to hit €1.1898. It also jumped 0.93% compared with the Canadian dollar at 5:47 pm CET, changing hands for 1.74380.
