Europe opens lower on coronavirus worries

European markets opened lower on Monday as investors remained worried about the impact of the coronavirus on the economy as the death toll climbed to over 900 in China and the United Kingdom declared the virus a "serious and imminent threat" to the public.

The FTSE 100 was down 0.26% at 9:01 am CET. Whitbread led the losses as its shares slid 2.25% at 9:01 am CET.

The DAX decreased 0.16% at 9:03 am CET with Lufthansa, down 0.78%, as the worst performer.

The CAC 40 declined 0.35% at 9:00 am CET as Peugeot fell 1.01% at 9:01 am CET.

The euro traded flat against the dollar, going for 1.09477 at 9:02 am CET, while the pound lost 0.05% compared to the US currency to sell for 1.28802 at the same time.
