AKK stepping down as CDU head

German Christian Democrats (CDU) Leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer will not run for the position of German chancellor in the next general election, a CDU spokesperson said on Monday. Kramp-Karrenbauer, who informed the party of her decision, also announced that she is planning to step down from the position of party leader at this summer and added that it is logical for the next party leader to run for chancellor.

The current CDU head explained her decision by saying that some members of the CDU are too close to the Left and the far-right AfD. A leadership election is set to be announced in the summer, according to media reports.

Kramp-Karrenbauer's move comes just days after CDU in Thuringia cooperated with the AfD to elect Thomas Kemmerich as state premier. Chancellor Angela Merkel said the election was "unforgivable" and asked for it to be repeated. In the aftermath of the scandal, Kemmerich announced he is resigning and a new election will take place.
