Friedrich Merz to run for CDU chair again - report

Friedrich Merz (pictured), a Christian Democrat and frequent critic of his party's former head Angela Merkel, is reportedly planning to replace the German chancellor. DPA news agency said that Merz had already tried to take the party's top position back in 2018. However, he lost to Merkel’s protegee Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.

Last week, Kramp-Karrenbauer said she won't be running for the chancellor position and raised some questions regarding the future of the conservatives' coalition with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD).

SPD said earlier today that they could quit the coalition with Merkel's conservatives if she is forced out as chancellor. SPD General-Secretary Lars Klingbeil said the party entered the coalition with Merkel and "we will leave the coalition with her - as planned at the next regular federal election."
