US stocks end mixed amid coronavirus spread

Markets in the United States finished mixed on Wednesday after beginning the trading day with small gains and then trading in the red in afternoon trade amid continuing coronavirus fears. By the latest reports, the total number of cases rose to 81,385, while 30,359 people successfully recovered. 2,771. have died from the infection. Meanwhile, the Department of Housing and Urban Development reported that sales of new single-family houses in the United States jumped 7.9% in January. Also, the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) said mortgage applications in the United States increased by 1.5%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.46% at the end of the day with Walt Disney Co losing 3.74%. The Nasdaq finished 0.44% in the green. Gilead Sciences was the best performer that rose 6.56%. The S&P 500 was 0.38% down at the end of the session as Carnival Corp plunged 7.51%.

The euro was flat compared to the dollar, declining 0.03% to 1.08821 at 4:02 pm ET.
