Spanish PM declares state of emergency over COVID-19

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez formally declared a state of emergency in the country on Saturday evening and imposed a nation-wide lockdown from Monday in order to prevent the coronavirus outbreak from exploding.

The lockdown is planned to last for two weeks. Citizens will not be allowed to leave their homes except to buy food and medicine, to go to work, to a bank, to take care of the young and the elderly or in case of an emergency. Before Spain, nation-wide lockdowns have been imposed in France, Poland, Denmark, Ireland, El Salvador and Italy.

Spanish authorities revealed earlier in the day that 1,083 more people have been found infected with the coronavirus since yesterday, while 60 more people died in the last 24 hours. In total, the country has registered 6,315 cases, ranking fifth in the world, while the death toll is at 193, only behind China, Italy and Iran.
