Europe falls amid COVID-19 panic

European stocks started lower on Monday as the number of deaths from the coronavirus on the continent continued to surge, with Italy's death toll now above 5,450 and Spain's higher than 1,770. Earlier, Airbus announced measures to improve its liquidity while the European Central Bank's Ignazio Visco hinted there may be more bond purchase programs in the future.

The DAX dropped 4.57% at 9:03 am CET as MTU Aero Engines lost 8.37% at 9:15 am CET. The FTSE 100 declined 1.48% at the 9:01 am CET, with property development firm Segro leading the losses as it traded 5.54% down at 9:01 am CET. France's CAC 40 fell 4.04% at 9:08 am CET. TECHNIPFMC plunged 7.96% at 9:02 am CET.

The euro decreased 0.08% to 1.06909 against the dollar at 9:16 am CET.
