France has 292 new COVID-19 deaths, global cases pass 700K

The death toll from coronavirus climbed by 292 in the past 24 hours to reach 2,606 in France as of 2 pm CET, the country's Public Health Agency confirmed on Sunday. The figure jumped by 12.6% compared to yesterday's number, but the daily increase in the virus-related deaths was lower compared to the previous three days.

Over the same period, a total of 2,599 people were tested positive for the infection nationwide with the country's coronavirus cases count going up by nearly 7% to 40,174. The increase in France brought the global death toll to above 700,000.

According to the agency's head Jerome Salomon, 19,354 people were hospitalized in France while 4,652 patients were in intensive care units due to critical condition. Meanwhile, 7,132 French residents successfully recovered from coronavirus.
