Ford to start making respirators in Michigan

Ford announced on Monday that it will start manufactring powered air-purifying respirators at its Flat Rock plant in Michigan on April 14. The carmaker noted the respirator production is part of a collaboration with 3M.

Additionally, Ford said it is working with UAW on the production of face masks that are to initially be used internally only. However, Ford will also seek medical use certification. The company added it is also collaborating with Thermo Fisher Scientific on coronavirus testing kits and with Joyson Safety Systems on reusable gowns.

Ford also noted that it has produced 3 million face ahields so far. Global Core Engineering for Vehicle Manufacturing Director Adrian Price said: "We are doing all we can to expand production and availability of personal protective equipment to help keep the true heroes – medical personnel – and our communities safe in the fight against COVID-19."
