German CDU likely to pick new leader in December - AKK

Outgoing head of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said on Tuesday the party will likely postpone the election of its new leader until December.

The leadership contest was initially scheduled for April 25 but was then delayed due to the epidemic. Kramp-Karrenbauer, who announced in February she will step down as CDU leader later this year, noted that her successor will now likely be chosen at the party's regular conference, rather than a special one.

"My impression is that the nearer we get to the summer break with a possible special party conference, the less the need for a conference that will take place just a few weeks before the normal one," she told dpa.
