Huawei, STMicro collaborating on chips
Huawei and STMicroelectronics have been designing chips together since 2019, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter. They are working on both mobile and chips for the auto industry which should help Huawei start off its autonomous vehicle technology. Until now, STMicroelectronics was only a chip supplier to the Chinese tech giant.
The partnership was created to help Huawei shift away from chipmakers that could need licensing in the United States, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, where they are facing bans and restriction over alleged espionage. Meanwhile, the STMicroelectronics partnership will enable Huawei to have access to software from US firms such as Synopsys and Cadence Design Systems, the report added.
STMicroelectronics stocks jumped 3.01% at 1:29 pm CET in Paris.
