US kicks off higher with earnings, data in focus

Equities on the United States stock markets traded higher at the opening bell with the Dow Jones gaining more than 200 index points as earnings season heats up.

The Delaware-based company DuPont's earnings per share stood at $0.84 in the first quarter of the fiscal year, while Regeneron Pharmaceuticals said it recorded a surge of 33% in revenue for the same period.

On the data front, the latest report from the US Census Bureau showed that the country's trade deficit widened by $4.6 billion in March compared to the month prior.

The Dow jumped 0.99% to open the session in the green with Exxon Mobil jumping over 4%, while the S&P 500 added 0.99% at the same time as IPG Photonics Corp surged over 15%. The Nasdaq 100 went up by 0.93% with Skyworks Solutions adding nearly 6%.

The euro slid 0.40% against the dollar, selling for 1.08637 at 9:29 am ET.
