Bitcoin climbs over $10,000 ahead of halving

The price of bitcoin climbed above $10,000 as investors await next week's halving of the most widespread cryptocurrency.

The halving, which happens every 210,000 blocks, or approximately every 4 years, is set to take place on Monday, around 3 pm ET. It will be the digital currency's third halving and will cut the number of rewarded bitcoins per block from 12.5 to 6.25. The halving events will continue until a total of 21 million bitcoins are mined and the reward falls down to 0.

Bitcoin surged 9.71% to $10,040 at 1:47 am CET.
