Bright: Pandemic could get worse and prolonged

A senior adviser at the National Institutes of Health, Rick Bright said on Thursday while being listened before the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Health that the world is facing a deadly virus. "The American economy is spiraling downward and the population is paralyzed. Everything must be done carefully with the guidance of best scientific minds. If not, the pandemic could get worse and prolonged. Without better planning, 2020 could become the darkest winter in modern history," he stated.

He added that "truth must be based on science. Let us lead, let us speak without fear. On Tuesday doctor Fauci said we have to be cautious. We should listen to him. While waiting for the vaccine which I believe will come, we must educate people about basics as is covering faces and washing hands."

Bright stressed the US needs a national testing strategy. "Initially, our nation wasn’t prepared as we could and should have been. We overlooked some signals. There will be plenty of time to look back and see what happened, but now we have to look forward. Only working cooperatively with global partners we can find a cure for COVID-19. We will either be remembered of what we did to save the world or how we failed," he said.
