Europe closes lower amid worries over US-China ties

European markets ended lower on Thursday as investors remained concerned over the relations between the United States and China as Beijing said that it is prepared to introduce countermeasures against Washington in case the US introduces coronavirus-linked sanctions. Earlier in the day, data showed European economies are still suffering from the COVID-19 lockdowns, despite better figures than in the previous month.

The FTSE 100 ended 0.86% in the red as Whitbread plc droped 12.36%. The DAX fell 1.41%, with Fresenius declining 4.08%. The CAC 40 lost 1.14%.

The euro was 0.23% down compared to the dollar, changing hands at 1.09556 at 5:42 pm CET.
