US should use HK human rights and democracy act - Hoyer

United States House Majority Leader Stany Hoyer (pictured) in a statement urged US President Donald Trump, as well as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to use the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, introducedback in 2019, and "send a strong message of American support for pro-democracy activists" in Hong Kong.

In the statement, Hoyer criticized the Administration for not taking action on the Chinese "assault on democracy" in the city, reminding Trump Congress enacted the aforementioned act back in November.

He insisted Hong Kong's "freedom" is now "threatened by the government in Beijing," condemning the US president for giving his support to the Chinese leader in the past in referring to him a "friend" and an "incredible guy."

The move comes after a national security bill put together by Beijing was submitted to China's National People's Congress (NPC) to be voted on in the next several days. The legislation received criticism, with many nations worried, as it is believed the law could negatively affect Hong Kong's autonomy.
