UK must stand up to China - former Hong Kong governor

The United Kingdom has a "moral, economic and legal" duty to protect Hong Kong's autonomy, the city's last governor Chris Patten was quoted by the Times on Saturday as the world reacted to China's proposed national security law.

According to Patten, who served as Hong Kong's last British governor from 1992 to 1997 when the city was handed back to Beijing, China is acting like a dictatorship. "The Hong Kong people have been betrayed by China. What we are seeing is a new Chinese dictatorship," Patten said. "The British government should make it clear that what we are seeing is a complete destruction of the Joint Declaration," he added.

The proposed national security law was met with sharp criticism from Western countries, including the United States, whose President Donald Trump warned that Washington would respond "very strongly" to the bill.
