Wall Street starts mixed as COVID-19 worries ease

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 350 points at the start of trading on Wednesday as Wall Street opened with strong gains as mortgage application data pointed to a recovery in the United States. Also before the bell, tensions remained high between the US and China over Hong Kong and President Donald Trump threatened to shut social media over free speech worries.

The Dow gained 1.41% at 9:30 am ET, with JPMorgan Chase surging 6.40% at the same time. The Nasdaq 100 decreased 0.17% at 9:30 am ET as Zoom Video Communications lost 4.70% at 9:34 am ET. The S&P 500 was 0.98% up at 9:30 am ET a top perfeormers came mostly from the travel industry.

The euro traded 0.18% higher against the dollar as it changed hands for 1.10020 at 9:33 am ET.
