Lack of oversight of Chinese firms is risk to US - Senate

The lack of oversight of Chinese companies in the United States "undermined" the communications systems in the US and "endangered" the country's national security, a report published on Tuesday by the Senate Subcommittee on Investigations showed.

The report criticized the Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Communications Commission for minimal oversight of Chinese telecommunications firms in the US, stating they only started looking into the work of three major Chinese state-owned carriers' work in the US recently despite the fact the Chinese companies have been active in the US since the early 2000s.

The subcommittee stressed that the US government recently increased oversight, but noted that Chinese telecommunications companies, such as China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, remain a risk to the US since Beijing "exerts control" over them. Furthermore, the report accused China of economic and cyber espionage through the companies.
