NIH: US to start 3 studies of COVID-19 vaccines in summer

The United States government wants to fund and run studies of experimental COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by AstraZeneca, Moderna Inc., and Johnson & Johnson, according to a National Institute of Health (NIH) official.

The trials would be the last stage of testing, as they are meant to confirm the vaccines' effectiveness and safety, said John Mascola, director of the vaccine research center at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in an interview for the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.

Mascola also stated that Moderna’s vaccine testing would start in July, with AstraZeneca’s and J&J’s vaccine right after that. The sample of each study is set to be around 30,000 people including those in experimental groups and those in control groups who will be given placebo shots.
