US slaps visa restrictions on Chinese officials

The United States imposed visa restrictions on Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials for allegedly violating Hong Kong's freedoms and "restricting human rights" in the city by adopting a new national security law, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Friday.

"The CCP has stepped up efforts to undermine Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy by announcing Beijing’s authority to 'supervise' Hong Kong’s governance, accusing at least one member of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council of misconduct, and moving to unilaterally and arbitrarily impose national security legislation on Hong Kong," Pompeo stated.

Earlier, the US Senate approved a bill to sanction Chinese officials enforcing the new national security law in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, media reported that Washington froze sources of funding used to back protests in Hong Kong against Beijing's national security law.
