India bans TikTok, other apps over security worries

India banned 59 Chinese mobile applications, including TikTok, on Monday due to security worries amid the country's dispute with China.

Indian Ministry of Information Technology said the blocked apps are, given the "information available, engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order." Apart from TikTok, the list of banned platforms includes the online messenger WeChat and Twitter-alike network Weibo.

The tensions between India and China over the Himalayan region of Ladakh began in early may and escalated an armed clash on June 16. Both countries later agreed to disengage the troops stationed at the territory.
