UAW asks GM to close Texas plant amid virus concerns

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union local chapter asked General Motors on Tuesday to temporarily close the SUV plant in Arlington, Texas, following the surge of the coronavirus cases in the federal state.

"Due to the most recent data on the COVID-19 outbreak, the Bargaining Committee has asked General Motors to shut down Arlington assembly until the curve is flattened for the benefit and well-being of our members," the union said in a statement.

GM said it was aware of the request but added there had been no changes in production plans at Texas plant as safety protocols are in place. Last week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the economy reopening plans would be halted due to the surge in new coronavirus cases.
