US Senate passes China sanctions bill over HK

The United States Senate passed a bill to introduce new sanctions on China over its Hong Kong national security law which came into force earlier this week. The bill passed the House of Representatives a day earlier.

Speaking ahead of the vote, Democratic Senator from Maryland Chris van Hollen called on Trump to sign the bill and "stand up to China." Earlier, National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow stated that the US was "furious" with China over its actions in Hong Kong.

The bill, which targets banks that do business with Chinese officials, will now be sent for final approval to President Donald Trump.
