China appoints director of HK national security office

China appointed member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Guangdong Provincial Committee Zheng Yanxiong as the director of the central government's newly created national security office in Hong Kong.

Zheng is best known for his sharp criticism of foreign media and their coverage of 2011 Wukan village protests over residents' allegations of the authorities' illegal land requisition. At the time he served as secretary-general of the Communist Party committee of Guangdong province.

The office was set up as China's national security law on Hong Kong, which includes severe prison sentences for colluding with foreign forces and terrorism-related activities, took effect earlier this week. Earlier, Eric Chan Kwok-ki was named the secretary-general of the Committee for Safeguarding National Security of Hong Kong.
