UK unemployment rate up to 3.9% in May

The rate of unemployment in the United Kingdom was at 3.9% in the three months to May, 0.1 percentage points higher on an annual basis, the Office for National Statistics said in a release on Thursday.

The employment rate in the UK was 0.3 percentage points higher compared to the same quarter a year ago and came in at 76.4%. The economic inactivity figure was estimated at 20.4%, which is 0.4 percentage point less than in the prior year.

Growth in average total pay slowed sharply for March to May, falling to a negative 0.3% for the first time since 2014. Regular pay growth slowed to 0.7%. Single month growth in average weekly earnings for May 2020 was negative 1.2% for total pay and 0% for regular pay.
