Barcelona imposes new measures to curb virus spread

Catalan authorities imposed new measures in Barcelona on Friday in an attempt to curb the spread of the coronavirus amid new outbreaks in the city.

Catalan Health Minister Alba Verges warned the region is facing "a lot of transmission at a high speed" and asked citizens to stay at home whenever possible. "It will take months, months, to manage this situation," she added. The authorities added that more cities in Catalonia are set to be locked down again due to a rising number in cases.

On Thursday, Spain reported over 1,300 new COVID-19 cases, most of which were registered in Catalonia. The figure marked the largest daily increase in infections in the country since late May.
