Conte warned Rutte of fallout if deal not reached - report

Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte (pictured right) told his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte (pictured left) that he will be held responsible if an agreement on the European Union's economic recovery package does not get finalized, Politico reported on Sunday, citing Italian officials familiar with the negotiations.

The leader of the Italian government reportedly warned Rutte that, even though he would briefly be considered a "hero" in the Netherlands, "all European citizens" will hold him liable "for blocking an adequate and effective European response." Conte also claimed that the Dutch prime minister's actions may lead to the dissolving of the EU's single market.

If a deal is not struck swiftly, the final cost of the bloc's recovery may be increased two or three-fold, the Italian prime minister allegedly added.
