Belarusian opposition leader leaves to Lithuania

Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya moved to Lithuania from her country after losing in presidential elections to incumbent President Aleksander Lukashenko, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius confirmed on Tuesday.

Tikhanovskaya, who decided to run against Lukashenko instead of her jailed husband, claims she won Sunday's election in Belarus, but official results show that Lukashenko took 80% of the vote. After the opposition disputed the results of the election, protests broke out in Belarus and one protester was killed. Tikhanovskaya's campaign noted she decided to leave Belarus over fears of "provocations."

The elections have been criticized by the United States as untransparent since there were no international observers present. Lukashenko has been president of Belarus since 1994.
