Belarus says protests started by 'professional coordinators'

The Belarusian Investigative Committee said on Thursday that the mass protests in the country following the presidential election were instigated by "professional coordinators."

The country's Interior Ministry said that around 700 people have been detained on Wednesday for participating in "unauthorized mass events" and added that over 100 policemen were injured in clashes with demonstrators since the protests started.

The demonstrations broke out on Sunday after exit polls showed President Aleksander Lukashenko secured around 80% of the vote and opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya rejected the result. The United States claimed the elections were "not free and fair" and the European Union slammed Minsk over "unacceptable state violence against peaceful protesters."
