Germany's Maas calls for Greece-Turkey dialogue

German Minister of Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas (pictured, right) called on Tuesday for the dialogue between Greece and Turkey, warning that the "smallest spark could spell disaster" in the East Mediterranean.

"To achieve this, we need steps toward easing tensions and to initiate direct discussions instead of new provocations. We want to support this as much as we can," he said. Maas also expressed Berlin's support of Athens, promising that "Greece's voice will have special weight."

Earlier in the day, Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias warned the country "stands ready to defend its sovereign rights against Turkey" amid the territorial disputes between the two nations.
