SpaceX-NASA deals at risk over Tesla-China links - report

United States Congress is looking at the potential national security risks stemming from contracts between Elon Musk's SpaceX and NASA, especially when taking into consideration the financial aid Tesla Inc. is receiving in China, the Washington Examiner reported on Wednesday.

According to an anonymous congressional Republican aide, Beijing could make its loans to Tesla contingent on the carmaker's compliance with certain requests by the Chinese government without US legislation that could prevent it. Colorado's Republican Senator Cory Gardner expressed similar concerns in an interview for the same media outlet, saying that Beijing could abuse deals with American companies to boost its own space program or its own national security efforts.

To counter the potential threat, Gardner proposed two amendments that would enable the government to review ties between NASA contractors and China, as well as suggesting NASA chiefs to examine such links before any agreements get reached.
