EU to buy 200M doses of Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine

The European Union completed on Wednesday the talks with Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE on purchasing 200 million doses of the pharmaceutical companies' COVID-19 vaccine.

The jab developed by Pfizer and BioNTech is the sixth vaccine backed by the EU, after Sanofi-GSK, Johnson & Johnson, CureVac, Moderna, and AstraZeneca signed contracts with the bloc in late July and August. Pfizer's CEO Albert Bourla revealed the previous week that some 23,000 people have so far enrolled in the vaccine trial's third phase.

"Our chances to develop and deploy a safe and effective vaccine have never been higher, both for Europeans here at home, or for the rest of the world. To defeat coronavirus anywhere, we need to defeat it everywhere," President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated.

Stocks of Pfizer and BioNTech rose by 1.50% and 4.30% in the premarket trading, selling for $36.47 and $62.40, respectively.
