Prosecutors seek joint trial in Floyd murder case

Prosecutors assigned to pursue the George Floyd murder case insisted in a first court appearance on Friday that the four accused former police officers should be jointly trialed. All four officers facing charges - Derek Chauvin, Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao - were present together in a courtroom for the first time since they were arrested.

"These defendants acted together, they were on the scene together, they were talking to each other during the nine minutes Floyd was on the ground," lawyer Neal Katyal claimed. On the other hand, the defense argued that the joint trial would be a conflict of interest.

George Floyd died in May after the use of excessive force during his arrest. Derek Chauvin was filmed kneeling on Floyd's neck while handcuffed, while the other three officers stood on the side watching. Chauvin was charged several days after the incident with second-degree murder. In late August, he asked the judge to dismiss the murder charges against him.
